Ash, "Fall Gold"
Fraxinus nigra 'Fallgold'
A selection of black ash, this narrow, uniform tree is seedless with long, dark green leaves that turn a bright golden yellow in fall. The leaves will begin to bud out near the end of May and will fall at the first frost. Fallgold will grow about 2' per year and is expected to live for 80 years.

Ash, "Northern Treasure"
Fraxinus x 'Northern Treasure'
Holding a beautifully balanced, upright oval shape, this ash has bright green leaves from May until fall when the colour will change to a golden yellow. It only occasionally produces small amounts of seed. It is a cross between the symmetrical Manchurian Ash and the extremely hardy native Black Ash, and has become one of our most-recommended shade trees.

Ash, Black
Fraxinus nigra
Black Ash is native to Manitoba and is extremely hardy. Its leaves are longer and the form is more upright and slender than Green Ash. Can be used as an upright shelterbelt or as an ornamental tree.

A very popular tree for street, shelterbelt and shade plantings because they are extremely cold hardy and tolerates a range of soils. Leaves are a vibrant green during the spring and summer and turn bright yellow in the fall. Life expectancy of Ash trees is 80 years with a growth rate of 1.5-2’ per year.

This birch has a more upright and narrow form, and is also more insect tolerant than others. An excellent choice for a narrow space or a feature plant. Leaves are green through spring and summer and turn yellow in the fall.

Populus deltoides 'Siouxland'
Manitoba’s largest tree; the trunk size can get to be 3-5’ across! The bark is deeply furrowed and light brown in colour, leaves are large glossy and heart shaped, and its branches grow up in a vase shape. This variety is seedless meaning no cotton fluff during the summer. It has a life span of 80-100 years.

Acer ginnala
A favourite tree for fall colour! Spring leaves have a reddish tinge, then turn green through summer, and finally brilliant red in the fall. Bright red seedpods come in August and are aesthetically pleasing. Growth rate of 1.5-2’ per year. .

Acer negundo
A very hardy maple with a yellow fall colour. When mature it becomes a very good climbing tree for children. It does not have a uniform branching pattern, but it is a popular shelterbelt tree. It has a growth rate of 2’ per year and a life span of 40-60 years.

Poplar, "Assiniboine"
Populus x 'Assiniboine'
The Assiniboine is great for a shelterbelt - extreme hardiness down to -60C. It can have issues on high pH soils, but otherwise tolerates our Manitoba conditions quite well. Relatively fast growth rate, around 2' - 3' per year; while it does not grow as quickly, it is a bit wider and is more thickly branched than Prairie Sky Poplar.

Populus x 'Okanese'
An excellent, fast-growing shelterbelt or shade tree. Tall and narrow, Okanese has a clean uniform look. Large glossy heart shaped leaves cover this tree from trunk to tip.
