Ash, "Northern Treasure"
Fraxinus x 'Northern Treasure'
Holding a beautifully balanced, upright oval shape, this ash has bright green leaves from May until fall when the colour will change to a golden yellow. It only occasionally produces small amounts of seed. It is a cross between the symmetrical Manchurian Ash and the extremely hardy native Black Ash, and has become one of our most-recommended shade trees.

Birch, Cutleaf Weeping
Betula pendula 'Dalecarlica'
The cutleaf weeping birch can be a very impressive landscape focal point if provided with even moisture. Its chalk white bark contrasts nicely with the rich green cascading foliage that turns golden in October. It's fast-growing, ~24" per year and moderately hardy.
Mature Width:
20 - 25'
Mature Height:
30 - 35'
Plant Care:
•Prefers a wind-sheltered location with even moisture; if it dries out for too long, birch borer will kill the tree, so supplemental moisture during a drought is necessary
•Mulch with 3"-4" of bark in a large circle around the tree to aid in moisture retention; even established trees will need watering after 2 weeks of drought

Butternut
Juglans cinerea
The large leaves on this Minnesota native are impressively tropical. It has small greenish-yellow flower tassels in spring that produce edible nuts which are similar in size to store-bought walnuts, but the shells are rough and thick. Fall color is butter yellow, and the nuts fall in early October. With a good shelterbelt, this unique beauty will grow well "inside the yard."
Mature Width:
30 - 35'
Mature Height:
30 - 35'
Plant Care:
•Needs a sunny, moist, well-drained spot with wind-protection; do not plant "high and dry" or "low and wet" - requires adequate moisture during a drought

A Dutch nurseryman discovered this impressive flowering crab in his Alberta tree farm; reaching nearly 40'x30', you can only imagine how beautiful it is when it is covered in pink flowers at the end of May!
