Caragana arborescens 'Lorbergii'
Small yellow flowers in spring lead to bean-shaped seed pods that are dropped in late August. Leaves are lime green and similar to the asparagus fern; they lay in a semi-weeping form. This eye-catching shrub is excellent centrepiece.

Pygmy Caragana is a compact, finely textured shrub. Its branches are thorny but graceful and spreading. It has yellow flowers in spring followed by small bean-shaped seed pods that drop in late August.

Caragana, "Sutherland"
Caragana arborescens 'Sutherland'
This is a narrow, upright selection of the common caragana used for hedging; and Sutherland can be used as a narrow hedge, but also has value as a feature or accent plant. Abundant yellow flowers in May turn into small "pea pods"; both are edible - the flowers are sweet and the pods are high in protein. The leaves usually lose their lustrous green in August and turn dull yellow in mid to late September.

Forsythia x 'Meadowlark' or 'Northern Gold'
Forsythias are the first shrub to bloom in spring with bright yellow flowers, and these two varieties are the hardiest tall cultivars for the prairies, but still need a wind-sheltered area, and snow cover is helpful. Stems can be cut like the pussy willow even in late winter; the cuttings will bloom in a vase of water. Fall colour is burgundy. Growth rate is 2’ per year.
